THE search for ancestors usually begins at the end and works backwards, but members of Salisbury branch of Wiltshire Family History Society have been reminded just how much information from the past 100 years is readily available.
Ted Udall set out how he worked backwards, researching his family in the 20th century, using records taken from a variety of sources to confirm data and family stories, solve some puzzles and uncover new information.
As well as the various new sites specialising in First World War records, he also demonstrated where to look for images of buildings and long-demolished streets where ancestors lived, and the value of sometimes overlooked records such as Absent Voters lists, street maps and directories, as well as other documents.
On October 15 at Wilton Community Centre at 7.30pm, the branch will hear John Hurley on suggestions for tracing living descendants of ancestors.
