JANE Easton, the new director general of the English Speaking Union (appointed in March 2014) visited the Salisbury and south Wiltshire branch of the ESU.

The AGM was held at the Rose and Crown in Harnham. This was the first meeting of the season and there is a very interesting programme of events and speakers to come, including the ESU schools' public-speaking competition.

Jane Easton spoke enthusiastically of the challenges and aspirations of the ESU, both nationally and globally.

In 2015/16 there are to be exciting new pro-jects involving Magna Carta and several poetry competitions which will be made public soon. The way forward will be to promote the internet and social media so that schools can access the information easily.

The Salisbury branch was congratulated for the recent success of the South Wiltshire Grammar School for Girls, who were the winners of the National Finals of the Public Speaking Competition for schools, held at Churchill College Cambridge.

Gill Prior, the re-elected chairman, and her husband Victor visited the cathedral on two consecutive days to witness the awards from the ESU. It has been said that this was “the most significant and prestigious ESU event of the year”.

To finish the meeting all members enjoyed lunch at the Rose and Crown of the river.
