MEMBERS and visitors were welcomed to the September meeting of Downton Evening WI by president Edna Pike.

Two members who had attended the Willow Weaving course displayed the items they had made.

The White Hart Hotel had been chosen as the venue for the October lunch.

The next Downland Group Meeting will be on November 3 at the Radnor Hall, Bodenham. Downton Evening will be responsible for the raffle. Members were asked to provide preserves for the sales table.

Events organised by other Institutes were announced.

Demi Ladwa, wearing an elegant blue sari, began her presentation on Indian cookery by introducing a Spice Tin containing seven essential spices. These, used in many combinations, are the basis of curries. She also explained her use of gluten-free gram flour made from chick peas Demi first prepared onion bhajis, rolling them with a specially-designed rolling pin. Members were invited to help with the rolling while she cooked. Secondly, she made puris, deep-fried spicy bread that puffed up during cooking. Both the bhajis and the puris were bite-size, and there were more than enough for everyone to enjoy.
