THE October meeting was chaired by Jean Kirkman, who welcomed Nick Hingston and a colleague to talk about antiques.

Nick brought several small items for members to see and handle, and to work out their purpose – a surprisingly difficult task, often with surprising answers. The speakers also discussed and valued items brought by members. This month the guild celebrated its 63rd anniversary with a dinner at the White Hart Hotel, hosted by Caroline Brocksom. Members were joined by guests from Federation and Chandlers Ford, and all enjoyed an excellent evening.

The talents of two members in particular were much appreciated – in Verbena Greenough’s beautiful table arrangements and Kathleen Allen’s celebratory cake, which has been maturing for nine months!

Members have also been out and about in October, with a group travelling by train to Bath for a chance to luxuriate in the wonderful spa waters, and take in a visit to the beautiful Abbey. Val’s Lunch Bunch visited the Coach and Horses, while the Nosh and Natter group literally “pushed the boat out” when they spent a day on a narrowboat on the Kennet & Avon Canal.

The Discussion Group followed their last meeting by sending their ideas on various local matters to the Mayor and Cllr Roberts, who will raise these matters at a council meeting – the response is awaited.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, November 13 at 7.15pm in Roman Road Methodist Lounge, when Cliff Topping will speak as An Artist in Pencil.

Filled shoeboxes for the Trussell Trust should be brought to this meeting. New members and visitors are welcome, call 01722 331275 for details.
