THE half-yearly meeting of the Downland Group of WIs was held at the Radnor Hall, Bodenham. President Edna Pike welcomed members from the group’s four Institutes, Odstock Nunton and Bodenham, Alderbury, Downton, and Landford Hamptworth and Nomansland, as well as guests from Laverstock, New Sarum and Redlynch.

Jerusalem was sung, followed by the business meeting.

John Baker then gave a talk on Gardens of Japan, the main features of which are rocks, gravel, bamboo, lanterns, water and willow. They are of three main types, hill and pond gardens which originated in China, stroll gardens designed to show plants and vistas to the best effect, and the waterless Zen gardens comprising rocks and gravel and intended for contemplation. With the aid of a superb photographic presentation John took us on a virtual tour, including the Royal Gardens of Tokyo, the Kyoto Temple Gardens and the Hiroshima Peace Garden.

Shrines feature in many gardens, as do tea houses. Certain objects have specific meanings, such as incense for wisdom, while deer are regarded as heavenly messengers.

Hostas are widely planted. These are a passion of John’s, whose Hampshire garden contains an outstanding collection. Finally, John gave us some tips on creating our own Japanese garden.

The Archbald Cup for a handmade and hand decorated box was won by Odstock Nunton and Bodenham WI.

Edna Pike thanked Downton for organising the raffle, Alderbury for the Sales Table and Odstock Nunton and Bodenham for providing a delicious tea. The next Downland Group Meeting will be on April 27 at Landford Methodist Church Hall.
