PETER Sutton (MA Cambridge) visited the ESU on November 19 at The Rose and Crown in Harnham.

Peter, an expert on the life of Edward Elgar, gave a most interesting talk to the members with an insight into the lesser known facts of the family background and private life of Elgar, rising from a trade background to being knighted in 1904.

The play Elgar and Alice, written in 2007 by Peter, was revived in 2011 for the Three Choirs Festival. Peter's modern verse translation of William Langland’s medieval poem Piers Plowman has just been published in the USA. Apart from translating 1,000 documents for the Council of Europe, UNESCO, art galleries and many other organisations, he has travelled globally speaking at conferences in Asia, Australia, Europe, North Africa and North America. He has lectured in universities in Armenia, New Zealand, Russia and here in the UK.

Other successes include, The Prebumptious Mr Punch and My Son Will.
