In October two former County Chairmen and guests from neighbouring Institutes joined Downton Evening members to celebrate the Institute’s 43rd birthday. Scrapbooks of photographs, press cuttings and cards, collected over many years and forming a substantial archive, were on display to revive happy memories of past events.

Congratulations were extended to the Quiz Team who came second at Redlynch WI’s Quiz Night. Several members had attended the Wiltshire Federation Annual Council Meeting at the City Hall, as well as the Downland Group Meeting at Bodenham.

Kate Edgar gave a lively talk on her life and career in music, the theatre and television, highlighting the shows she had worked on and her involvement with local theatre and music since, and before, moving to Downton. Singing, she explained, is a cathartic activity. After facial and vocal exercises we were ready to rehearse Tuxedo Junction, Kate’s choice of song for us. At the November meeting, Edna Pike, President, introduced Robert Wright who gave a presentation on the history and development of traditional canal painting.

Members arrived for December’s Christmas Party to find attractively decorated tables, together with crackers made by Secretary Gill Draper and Hazel Hillman. Rachel Phillips demonstrated three very different seasonal flower arrangements and gave tips and ideas for having a go at home. Nicola Rodriguez will recount her family’s sailing voyages at the January meeting. Unless otherwise indicated we meet in The Sherwood Rooms, Wick Lane, at 7.30 pm every third Monday. A warm welcome awaits new members and visitors. Please contact Edna Pikeby telephoning 01725 511332.
