THE first meeting of 2015 was the annual members’ evening with no speaker.

The formal business, under the chairmanship of Caroline Brocksom, was soon dispensed with, and there followed an entertainment by the committee. This was masterminded by Gwen Brocksom, and based on old time music hall – the Good Old Days!

There were rousing songs, accompanied by Annie Salter, interspersed with some interesting and comedic items, all co-ordinated by a dinner-jacketed MC.

Members entered into the spirit of the evening by dressing up and joining in – all in all a very good show.

Another aspect of this “in-house” evening was the exhibition of the work so far of Marjorie Waters’ sketching group formed in 2014.

Marjorie has nurtured some considerable talent in her small group, and future exhibitions are anticipated with pleasure.

Members of this group were particularly pleased to welcome Cliff Topping in November, a well-known local artist, who gave a talk to the guild entitled An Artist in Pencil.

He showed projections of many of his works, mainly architectural and often depicting various views of the cathedral, and brought everything to life with comments and anecdotes – an excellent speaker who has been invited to come again next year.

The various groups are still active, except the walkers who are waiting for longer evenings and warmer weather.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, February 12, at 7.15pm in Roman Road Methodist Lounge, when there will be a talk entitled African Safari given by Jeremy Broad. New members and visitors are welcome, or call Chris on 01722 331275 for more information.
