SCIP held a meeting on January 22, when some important elements of the conflict in the region were vividly brought home to members.
Our invited speaker Lindsey Sharpe described the human rights abuses against Palestinians which she had witnessed in her time as an ecumenical accompanier with Ecumenical Accompaniment in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) in east Jerusalem in 2014.
Many members were critical of the Israeli government’s responsibility for injustices, but others sought to defend the laws behind them.
Lindsey pointed out the illegality in international law of these Israeli policies – Israel being the occupying power in much of Palestine.
Some of the audience countered with concerns over security for Israelis.
The difficulties of reconciliation were evident, but for those SCIP members present, it reinforced the need to remain diligent and steadfast in our quest for peace with justice for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
Out next meeting is the film Open Bethlehem at Salisbury’s Studio Theatre at 7.30pm on Friday, March 13.
Tickets and details are available by calling from 01722 349740.
