SOUTH Wiltshire Ramblers are calling for new members to come and find out more about the benefits of walking.

The group’s New Year lunch at the White Hart Hotel attracted almost 90 members – both past and present walkers, including Ted Angel, now in his 93rd year, who still walks five or six miles once, or sometimes twice, a week.

A spokesman for the group said: “The benefits of walking a reasonable distance, especially up and down hill, a few miles once or twice a week are obvious.”

The ramblers also have two teams – heavy and light gangs – who turn out once a month to help and support the council's footpath wardens clear overgrown paths and repair or replace stiles, kissing gates, sleeper bridges, board walks and steps.

Ramblers HQ organised a development day at Sarum College with sessions on 10 different topics including planning and leading walks, promoting group activities, and rights of way, as well as a forum with the Ramblers' chief executive.

The South Wiltshire Group was well represented and there was good support from ramblers groups from the south and west of England.
