STRONG men from the Woodford Valley flexed their muscles and battled it out over a carrier of the River Avon during a Diamond Jubilee tug of war.

The event, which included four teams of eight and saw The Fat Bustards reign supreme, was inspired by a photo of a similar competition held at the same spot in Lower Woodford in the late 1960s.

Organiser Lindsay Guilder said: “It’s great, there’s been a lot of heartiness.

“They were all in good form.”

Among the spectators was the deputy mayor of Wilton, Phil Matthews, who took part in the original tug of war.

“I’ve come back for old time’s sake,” he said, “I’m glad they’re reviving it.”

Other events during the jubilee weekend in the valley included a family bicycle treasure hunt, a barn dance and an art exhibition.
