CAPTAIN Heather Stanning, who won Olympic gold for the women’s double pair rowing competition at the 2012 Olympics, presented a newly commissioned cup for sporting excellence at 32 Regiment Royal Artillery.
The trophy, called the Stanning Cup, will be awarded annually to the sportsman or woman who has contributed the most to their sporting discipline throughout the year.
The Stanning Cup’s first recipient was Provost Staff Sergeant Kerry Roberts for his outstanding contribution to Royal Artillery golf.
Staff Sgt Roberts, 41, is the current 32 Regiment golf captain and secretary.
He has played for regimental, gunner, army and combined services teams. It will be a lasting and fitting tribute to Staff Sgt Roberts, who will retire from the army in April.
Staff Sgt Roberts’ battery Sergeant Major, WO2 Chris Price commented: “What Staff Sergeant Kerry Roberts has achieved in the sporting arena is incredible; he has been an evocative figure and an ambassador for Royal Artillery sport.”
As a tribute to 32 Regiment, Capt Stanning also presented the rowing kit she was wearing when she won Olympic gold to the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Craig Palmer. The rowing kit will be hung in the regimental headquarters.
