Soldiers sail around UK coastline
8:58am Wednesday 13th February 2013 in News By David Falcke
A TEAM of soldiers from 26 Engineer Regiment based at Perham Down celebrated the end of their tour in Afghanistan by sailing around the coastline of Great Britain.
The trip was carried out in difficult conditions and saw the crew depart from Gosport, heading off in a westerly direction.
Their route took them to Weymouth, Falmouth and Port Douglas in the Isle of Man.
The third leg proved to be the highlight as they headed towards the Scottish Isles.
“We moved inwards to Fort William and a snow-covered Ben Nevis was a stark contrast to the desert landscape of the previous seven months,” said Staff Sergeant Jason West.
“This was the jewel in the crown when it came to scenery.”
The final leg came down the east coast, arriving at Cowes.
Staff Sgt West added: “We sailed 1,866 nautical miles, including 136 night hours, but we all had the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the voyage as well as our tour.”
