10:20am Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
LIEUTENANT Colonel Mark Williams has been appointed as the new Millennium Stadium manager for the Welsh Rugby Union, one of the most high-profile jobs in Welsh sport.
The 42-year-old-will assume the role the day after he brings to a close a 20-year army career, having served with 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh.
Lt Col Williams has completed multiple tours of duty in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq, where he was awarded an MiD for actions in combat following his role as company commander leading 135 Welsh soldiers on countless dangerous missions into Basra during the height of the fighting in 2007.
He was second-in command of 2 R WELSH from 2010 to 2012, when he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and was posted to Warminster as SO1 Combined Arms Tactics Division.
He joins Josh Lewsey, a former Gunner officer, as a member of the WRU’s executive board.
He said: “I am deeply honoured to be joining the WRU in such an important role, and I relish the challenges and opportunities this represents for me. I know my military and leadership experience will serve me well and I look forward to working with a great team at the WRU.”
