AS part of a series of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, ABF The Soldiers Charity have partnered with Ancestry.co.uk to create The Frontline Walk.

The Frontline Walk takes place from October 15 to 19 and will cover around 75 miles through tough, muddy northern France, passing cemeteries and battlefields to finally finish at the Menin Gate, exactly 100 years on from the start of the Battle of Ypres.

Organisers are trying to ensure that every regiment that fought in the war is represented; people can walk for their grandfather’s regiment, their regiment or the regiment that soldiers from their home town were recruited into.

They are looking forward to hearing the many personal stories people may have to share about their relatives and their experiences in the war, while they cover the miles of the Frontline Walk.

There is a registration fee of £150 and each walker is asked to raise a minimum of £1,600 in sponsorship.

This minimum target includes travel, accommodation and food so there is nothing else for walkers to pay (travel costs will not exceed £750).

Ancestry.co.uk is giving away one military background Investigation, where it will delve into a family’s military past and report back on their findings.

The first 100 people to donate a gift of £100 or more will be automatically entered into a prize draw. The winner will be contacted by phone and announced on The Soldier’s Charity website.

To enter the competition call 0207 8113231 to make your donation, quoting The Ancestry.co.uk Frontline Walk Competition.
