THE Ministry of Defence has announced a £3.5 billion contract with General Dynamics UK to supply 589 new armoured fighting vehicles called the SCOUT SV to the army.
They will replace the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) which have been the backbone of armoured reconnaissance regiments for over 40 years The SCOUT SV programme includes six variants: Scout Reconnaissance, Protected Mobility Reconnaissance Support (PMRS), Command and Control, Engineering Reconnaissance, Repair, and Recovery.
It has an upper design limit of 42 tonnes of driveline capability, scalable and open electronic architecture and a modular armour system, with a 40mm cannon integrated into a revolutionary, user-defined, fightable turret.
Where the operation dictates, a fully stabilised remote weapons station can be fitted to the turret instead of the primary sight.
Deliveries of Scout specialist vehicles are planned to start in 2017.
The training establishment and first squadron will be equipped by mid-2019 to allow conversion to begin with a brigade ready to deploy from the end of 2020.
