THE 2012 Pain on the Plain cycling event will take place at Tedworth House over the weekend of July 7 and 8 and promises to be a memorable day, with more than 500 riders expected.

The POTP Sportive is now in its third successive year and is nestled well amongst other sportive events and a build up to the Olympics.

Again this year the army has teamed up with prolific sportive organiser WheelsinWheels.com to develop one of the most memorable sportive events on the cycling calendar.

The weekend will be an action packed affair with events and attractions to entice all ages and ability groups.

There will be road events ranging from 50 km through to 100 miles across Salisbury Plain.

There will also be events tackling some of the hardest routes around Salisbury Plain and family ride, which will give the whole family a scenic trip of five to ten miles seeing the very best the plain has to offer.

In addition, on Saturday the event will host the Raleigh Chopper World Championships, the Army Cycling Road Race Championships and the Tedworth House Circuit Race Championships 2012 which will see elite riders from all over the country come and compete.

On Sunday other attractions to make this a real family event include the family ride; the REME Band; the REME Parachute Display Team; a charity auction; an Army Air Corps demonstration and a professional race car demonstration.

The event is being organised by Captain Brett Shaw from 4 Close Support Battalion REME, Tidworth who is currently serving in Afghanistan.

“We want this to be a great weekend, both for sports cycling enthusiasts but also for families,” he said. “I hope as many people will come and support us, and all profits made will go to SSAFA Forces Help.”
