Cadet volunteers receive honours

TWO volunteers from Salisbury have been awarded the Lord Lieutenant’s Commendation for Meritorious Service for their work with the reserve forces.
Lieutenant Michael Dibben, 53, and Lieutenant Commander Clive Hackett, 54, were presented with their awards by Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sarah Rose Troughton.
The ceremony was held at Devizes Town Hall Assembly Rooms and it commended the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to the reserve forces in the region, and the wider community.
Lt Dibben has been with Training Ship Salisbury since 1977 and he was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1986. He has trained hundreds of Sea Cadets through a number of competitions, bringing home many national rowing accolades.
He has also educated young people in the local community, delivering Sea Cadet talks in many of Salisbury’s schools.
Lt Dibben has run the sessions at his own expense, purely for the benefit of the community.
Lt Cmdr Hackett took command of the Sea Cadet unit in 1984 and has been with the organisation for more than 36 years.
He was commended for his leadership style that enabled him to command a sizeable unit and take the cadets to countless competitions, where they have won many national awards for rowing and sailing boat handling. He often gives up time to mentor his cadets and younger staff in an effort to encourage them to deliver their maximum potential. Under his enthusiastic and motivated management, each year more than 60 cadets earn boat work qualifications at the Salisbury camp.
Brigadier Tony Dalby-Welsh, chief executive of the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets Association, said: “Each recipient of the Lord Lieutenants’ Award is a credit to Wiltshire and should be proud of their outstanding achievements. These people are excellent examples of the commendable contribution volunteers make to their local community. Without the efforts of volunteers like Michael and Clive, it would be impossible to offer such a valuable service to the region.”
