A SPECIAL visitor popped into the Rose and Crown in Harnham on Monday.

Rusty is the first Guide Dog puppy to be trained thanks to money raised by the Salisbury branch of Guide Dogs.

When the branch was set up 18 months ago it set itself an initial target of raising £5,000 to train a puppy.

They soon met their target and golden retriever cross Rusty is now coming to the end of his first year of training, while the branch is looking to raise even more towards funding training for dogs to transform the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

Debbie Furnell from Guide Dogs said: “I was so excited about his visit as this is why I do all of the volunteering, and just to think that we have been part of Rusty's journey to help him transform another blind or partially sighted person’s life is reward in itself.”

The group has had a huge amount of community and business support with a range of fundraising events being held, including a recent music event at The Chough in Salisbury, which raised more than £400.
