WORK has begun on a new £1million community building in Whiteparish that will provide both a village hall and sports facilities.
The Memorial Centre, which is being built on the memorial ground, is expected to be completed by mid-November. It is the result of many years of planning and a large fundraising drive.
Project manager Linda Palmer said: “This new centre is the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of people over the years, and although it represents change, it is undoubtedly a change for the better, with facilities befitting a village in the 21st century.
“There has been a lot of efforts along the way but building has finally started and we are pleased to have Sid Roberts, who has been involved for many years, as our chairman, and look forward to completion.”
Last August the two charitable trusts which control the village hall and the memorial ground merged to form one trust to move the project forward.
The construction programme involves demolishing the existing pavilion before new foundations are laid. When completed, the centre will include a meeting room and a village hall with new kitchen facilities and changing rooms.
The current village hall, in Romsey Road, was sold at the beginning of February and the trustees have agreed with the purchasers of the site to lease the hall until the end of May so it will still be available for hire until that time.
