Carved cathedral model to be sold
A CARVED model of Winchester Cathedral made by a sculptor who was born in Salisbury is going under the hammer.
The lot by Richard Cockle Lucas, which has a sale estimate of £1,000 to £1,500, is being sold by Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury Salerooms on March 26.
Born in 1800, Lucas moved to Winchester at the age of 12 to apprentice for his uncle and discovered his talent for carving and sculpture. He studied in London at the Royal Academy Schools then left the capital to live in Otterbourne near Winchester, finally settling in Romsey.
An eccentric, Lucas was known for believing in fairies and also for riding around Southampton in a two wheeled vehicle like a Roman Chariot.
His works have been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery and The Victoria and Albert Museum. Lot 542 is stamped ‘R. C. Lucas Winston’ and is a carved wood model of the choir of Winchester Cathedral, with lectern, pulpit, pews and Gothic screen, with a parquetry floor and lift-off glazed cover, 32cm high x 85.7cm wide, x 42cm deep.
