Consultation on council tax plan
NEW Forest District Council is consulting residents again on whether they’d like council tax benefits claimants to pay more towards the tax.
All those of working age who currently receive Council Tax Support may have to pay a minimum 20 per cent when the council changes its support scheme next year. Currently, the minimum contribution is 8.5 per cent.
Council Tax Benefit was scrapped by the government in March and councils introduced Council Tax Support. But funding to provide it has been cut by around £1 million in the Forest and the council needs to make up the shortfall or cut other services.
A local support scheme requiring working age claimants to pay a minimum 20 per cent was approved by councillors last year following consultation with residents.
But the scheme was put on hold after the government chipped in a grant for the first year, aimed to ease the transition for those on low income. This scheme only required a minimum 8.5 per cent contribution.
To find out more go to www.newforest.gov.uk/cts or phone customer services on 023 8028 5000 for a paper copy of the questionnaire and supporting documents. Residents have until September 27 to take part in the consultation.
