Warning after distraction burglars target the elderly
ELDERLY people have been targeted by distraction burglars in Salisbury.
Thefts occurred at properties in Fairview Road at just after 5pm on July 31 and India Avenue at around noon on August 13. Cash, bank cards and jewellery were stolen in the burglaries.
The offenders are targeting elderly and vulnerable people in their own homes and distracting them whilst they steal money and valuables. Salisbury Priority Crime Team is appealing for residents to be vigilant.
A 26 year old local man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on police bail pending further enquiries.
DC Nick Holt said: “These offences are devastating for the elderly victims who are deceived in their own homes. We would encourage all those with elderly relatives or neighbours to remind them of the Stay Out Stranger advice to help prevent them becoming a victim of rogue traders or distraction burglars.’ Help stamp out doorstep crime by: • Encouraging elderly or vulnerable relatives or neighbours not to answer the door to strangers • Advising them not to agree for work to be carried out by doorstep callers • Making sure that they don’t keep large amounts of cash at home • Encouraging them to call Wiltshire Police if they see anything suspicious.
