Blind association members try kayaking
2:00pm Sunday 8th September 2013 in Headlines
MEMBERS of Dorset Blind Association tried kayaking at Blashford Lakes, near Ringwood for the first time.
Instructors from Spinnaker Sailing Club enabled the visually impaired rowers to control their kayaks and make progress on the water.
Judy Bannon, Dorset Blind Association community support worker, said: “You get a real sense of freedom doing something like this that’s so different from our members’ everyday lives.
“It improves fitness and gives members a sense of independence that proves their visual impairment doesn’t have to be a barrier.”
Instructor Stephen Taylor, who has run many events at the club for New Forest Sailability, said: “These programmes are highly beneficial and very encouraging for the people taking part.”
Dorset Blind Association helps 1,000 blind or partially sighted people each month.
