New St Paul's community centre opens
A NEW community centre and coffee shop opened its doors on Sunday following a four-year development project.
SP2 in Fisherton Street is a new community facility built by St Paul’s Church.
A large crowd gathered to watch the Bishop of Ramsbury Dr Edward Condry and John Glen MP declare the building open.
About 800 people were treated to free tea and cake, and drivers on St Paul’s roundabout hooted their horns to show their support for the new centre which has transformed a dilapidated building into a gleaming glass-fronted café and community centre.
“People watching the redevelopment have been wondering what’s been happening behind all these glass windows,” said Andrew Robertson, project manager and associate leader of St Paul’s.
“It’s great to be able to throw the doors open and invite the community in. We want this centre to be a place where local people can come and meet friends, talk to the volunteers and get practical help with life’s up and downs from the classes and groups that will meet here.” Jon Langford from St Paul’s Church added: “This is the church rolling up its sleeves and providing a service for the local community.
“Whoever you are, we want you to know that you’re welcome at SP2.” The coffee shop opens its doors fully from September 30, 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
