Amputee runner is an inspiration
A WOMAN from Burley joined Paralympian hero Richard Whitehead on part of his epic run covering 40 marathon distances in 40 days.
Caroline Rowley ran 10k from Liskeard towards St Austell with double amputee gold medallist Whitehead on the final stage of his gruelling 977-mile challenge spanning the length of Britain from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
Mrs Rowley said: “Running with Richard was amazing. He is such an inspiration and the feeling of running with a national hero is indescribable.
It was certainly the best 10k I have ever run.”
Mrs Rowley, who completed the London Marathon in 3hrs 20mins, won a competition to run with Whitehead.
She said: “Richard is such a lovely, genuine and great man who not only inspires me but everyone who he comes into contact with.”
Whitehead ran the distance not only as a personal challenge, but to provide hope and opportunity for people while raising £1m for disability charity Scope and cancer charity Sarcoma.
Mrs Rowley’s nine-year-old son Teddy, who started the 10k run with a hooter, was so inspired that he has vowed to raise £1,000 for the two charities.
Mrs Rowley said: “Richard was very open about his prosthetic legs and took them off in front of Teddy.
“After we finished the 10k distance we were Richard’s pop-up support group, showing up at various stages along the route.
“Teddy was so in awe of Richard that he has promised to raise £1,000 for Scope and Sarcoma. I am so proud of him.
“This idea was his alone because he wants to help people who are less fortunate than himself.
“Richard inspired a nine-year-old to focus and do something positive.”
Teddy has organised two events to raise funds for Scope and Sarcoma.
A beach ‘fancy dress exercise’ is being held at 723 beach hut at Boscombe Manor on October 26 at 8.30am followed by a cake sale.
And a fire engine pull is being held at Merryweather Park in Bransgore on November 17.
