Diamond day for Peggy and Percy
A DIAMOND couple who have lived in Downton all their married lives celebrated their special day surrounded by family and friends.
Peggy and Percy Gilbert met at Downton Junior School where they were in the same class.
They got together in 1951 when Mr Gilbert came back from doing his National Service in Hong Kong and Singapore.
The couple were married at Charlton All Saints Church on October 17, 1953. Mr Gilbert, 82, worked in a brewery in Salisbury before running his own painting and decorating business until he retired.
Mrs Gilbert, 83, worked at a chemist in Downton and she has volunteered at the Downton Friendship Group for the last 34 years.
The couple have three children, Michael, Raymond and Caroline, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs Gilbert said the secret to their long and happy marriage is having a sense of humour. The couple, who enjoy gardening together, celebrated their anniversary with a lunch on Friday followed by a party in Downton on Saturday. “We had a lovely time,” said Mrs Gilbert.
