CREATURES of the night should be gathering at a nature reserve near Steeple Langford on Friday.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is holding a Nature at Night event on Friday, when visitors will have the chance to encounter the night-time activity of moths, barn owls and meteor showers.

The trust’s centre manager for Langford Lakes, Stuart Maughan, said “Families can come along from 6pm to 8pm to explore the reserve and see if they can spot the creatures of the night.

"We’ll be owl-watching and moth-trapping, and seeing what comes out at night around the lakes. We will even provide lanterns for anyone who finds the darkness just too dark.

"From 8pm to around 1am, we’ll have experts on hand from Salisbury Plain Observing Group to explain meteor showers and, weather permitting, we’ll have a great view as they streak through the night sky.”

Langford Lakes is far enough away from light pollution but easily accessible for the public, with good on-site parking. The Trust will provide equipment such as binoculars and telescopes and light refreshments will be available. The event is free to attend, but donations of between £3 and £5 are requested.
