FRIENDS and family of a 19-year-old man who died in a cycling accident are setting their next challenge to raise funds in his memory.

The group have been fundraising for the Wheels4Life charity through the Rory Walworth Memorial Fund since the keen cyclist died in an accident in 2009, when his bike collided with a tractor at the junction of a footpath and farm track close to the A36.

Wheels4Life provides bicycles to people in the developing world who have no access to public transport and might live ten or 20 miles away from the nearest school, doctor or workplace.

The most recent event, a Boxing Day Memorial rugby match and black tie dinner saw the fundraisers go past the £40,000 mark and they have already helped thousands of people in Kenya.

Mr Walworth’s mother Lynn said: “We are thrilled the charity has benefited so well and the feedback we receive is always so personal and heart-warming. It makes a huge difference knowing exactly where and how the money we raise is being used. All our family and friends have worked hard in doing something positive in Rory’s memory.”

The next fundraising challenge will be a 19-mile walk on April 5, the fifth such event. Buses will pick people up from Salisbury and Mere and take them to the start in Corfe Castle.

The walk will cover Swanage, Seacombe, Worth Matravers and Kingston before heading back to Corfe Castle. There will be a charge of £10 to cover food and drinks – bacon rolls in the morning and a barbecue lunch – and the cost of the bus will vary depending on how many people take part. Dogs are welcome.

Anyone who wants to take part should contact Lucy Hall at lucypj.hall@gmail.com by January 24.
