VOLUNTEERS who have been working in the countryside are celebrating installing their 50th kissing gate on south Wiltshire’s footpath network.

Ramblers have been working with the Southern Area Board to open up footpaths around the area, and installed their milestone gate in Alderbury last Monday.

People from across the Southern Wiltshire community area turned out and joined local volunteers in what is proving to be a pioneering project.

Lead volunteer Nigel Walsh, from Firsdown, said: “A big thank you to all volunteers, including Brendan Jeynes and Tony Weatherington from Alderbury, who participated in our 50th gate installation and, of course, to all those including the Ramblers who did many of the previous ones.”

Nick Cowen, Rights of Way Warden, said: “This is a massive achievement, a great example of how communities can get involved in local service delivery.”
