THE wait is over as Salisbury Sixth Form College announced the site for its new college this morning.

Everyone has been wondering where the new college will be over the last six months and the trustees announced today that a new building will be built on Tollgate Road in a derelict car park next to Wiltshire College Salisbury.

The new building will not be ready until 2015 so in the meantime students and staff will have an interim home at Wiltshire College.

The announcement came after negotiations with the Education Funding Agency, which secures sites for new schools.

Neil Owen, chairman of governors for the new college, said: “It’s hard to find an appropriate site within the city and we are delighted that the EFA has been able to come up with this ideal site for us.

“To be able to create our own purpose-built college is a dream come true for S6C.”

Work is due to begin shortly to refurbish the interim accommodation, ready for students aged 16 to 19 to start in September. They will have their own entrance and reception, common rooms and study areas in the Wiltshire College building, as well as specialist facilities for all subjects.

The college has also partnered with CSE Education Systems to provide the best IT facilities available.

An open day will be held in March to allow prospective students the chance to view the interim accommodation, hear more about courses on offer and help shape the plans for the new building.

Students who have not applied yet can still do so but should get applications in before the end of this term.

Principal Simon Firth said: “We are now in a position to start the design process for the new building and it will be marvellous to give the students who have already applied for September the chance to contribute their ideas. In the meantime, we will start in our own excellent facilities in Wiltshire College’s Salisbury campus and we are looking forward to that.”
