STUDENTS at St Joseph’s School have been going bananas for Fairtrade.
To mark Fairtrade Fortnight the youngsters have been buying and baking using Fairtrade produce, which helps to ensure farmers and workers around the world receive a fair price for their goods.
Last year, as a result of the success of Fairtrade Fortnight, a group of 20 pupils in years 7 and 8 set up their own Fairtrade enterprise, meeting on a regular basis to organise events in the school.
Every day during Fairtrade Fortnight, they ran a daily pocket money stall where students have been able to buy bracelets, pens and key rings, as well as Fairtrade break time snacks.
“We like being part of the Fairtrade enterprise because we know that we are helping people who are less fortunate than ourselves but we have fun while we’re doing it,” said Solenn Davies, vice-chairman of the enterprise.
