CANCER patients in Salisbury accessed more than £1m in financial support last year thanks to the Wiltshire Citizens Advice Macmillan Service.

The charity’s latest report says that about 400 cancer patients in the city were helped.

The team support patients of Salisbury District Hospital and gives advice and support about benefits, grants and debt. The service is hosted by Wiltshire Citizens Advice, and has been funded by Macmillan Cancer Support.

“People living with cancer and their families often experience financial hardship, usually brought about by a drop in income and the many additional expenses incurred due to the illness,” said Leah Redding, advice services manager at Wiltshire Citizens Advice. “We help address these needs and worries by providing free, confidential and impartial advice on benefits, employment issues, money matters, housing and travel.”

Nici Bauckham, Macmillan development manager for Salisbury said: “The latest annual report helps to give an insight into the sheer number of people living with cancer locally who are in need of financial advice and support. Working in partnership with Wiltshire Citizens Advice has enabled us to reach so many more people when they need it the most. It’s fantastic news that we’ve been able to extend the funding and partner with Wiltshire Council to support this vital service – no one should have to face the financial impact of cancer alone.”
