MAJOR amputations due to diabetes have fallen by one-fifth in west Hampshire after more resources were put into foot care.
The West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is working with Diabetes UK to make improvements to foot care services. New figures published by Public Health England indicate that, after some “intense focus” on improving foot care services in west Hampshire, diabetes-related major amputations have fallen by almost 20 per cent over the last three years.
Early diagnosis of diabetes along with early effective treatment has been shown to reduce the risk of foot ulceration which can lead to amputation.
Dr Nigel Sylvester, vice-clinical chairman for the CCG, said: “We continue to support improvements in related services throughout our community.”
