AN army major who loves exploring is donating some of the proceeds from his book to a national charity for carers.

Major Dan Ashton, 37, from Salisbury, who serves with the Royal Corps of Signals, wanted to raise money for Carers Trust, a charity that supports unpaid carers, after his wife became ill.

In 2012, he undertook a solo trek from north to south Iceland to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Despite having to cut the trek short when close to the finish line due to adverse weather conditions and injury, he raised more than £4,000 for Carers Trust.

Major Ashton has written a book about his adventure, Iceland – A Single Endeavour, and a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Carers Trust.

He is also planning to go back to Iceland this winter to attempt the trek again.

He also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his eldest son Cameron, 20, in March to raise awareness of young carers, which raised more than £20,000.

Major Ashton said: “Carers Trust supports people from all walks of life that have found themselves in the unenviable circumstance of having to dedicate their lives to the support of someone close to them.

“To me, there are so many people in the UK that undertake this selfless act quietly and in the background. To me, they are truly amazing people who deserve the supporting hand that Carers Trust offers.”
