GINGERBREAD mayors are being sold by a Salisbury bakery to raise funds for Exeter House School.

Henderson’s bakery in the Market Place is supporting Mayor Jo Broom’s appeal through which she hopes to raise £50,000 for the school to transform an underused area of its grounds into a special place for students to connect with nature and the environment.

Half the profits from sales of gingerbread mayors, priced at £1.20, will be donated to the appeal.

Youngsters from First Steps nursery were invited to try out the new product at the bakery on Monday morning.

Paul Henderson, who owns the bakery, said: “Jo came to us and told us about her plans and we thought it was a great idea and a great charity to support - it’s for children and education, and it’s local.”

Ros Haigh, fundraising coordinator at Exeter House School, said: “This is such an amazing opportunity for us. A lot of people have heard of Exeter House but don’t know anything about it or where it is. It’s amazing for us to get the school and its work known.”

Cllr Broom is hoping to get a different business in the city each month to offer a ‘mayor’s special’ to support the project.
