THREE students from New Forest Primary School won a national competition to design the Commonwealth Games athletes' village on computer game Minecraft.

Year 6 pupils Kyle Dear, William Richards and Katie Badham, and her sister Zoe, who is at The Romsey School, took just over a month to design the village for the competition, which was open to all ages.

The students play on the game over the internet after school and they worked as a team to virtually build different parts of the village.

The team, who were supported by the school, came joint first in the competition with a group of students from the University of Glasgow, and they won £100 in Amazon vouchers.

Their teacher, Caroline Morland, said: “I thought it would be a nice thing for them to do but it was such a big thing and I didn’t think they would get it finished because it was the same time as their SATS. But they all came away with amazing results and they won the competition.”

Mrs Morland said the school is looking at using Minecraft as an educational tool next year.
