A FIRE ripped through a field in Durrington yesterday afternoon coming within 200m of houses, according to eye witnesses.

It happened on land off Larkhill Road at around 4pm.

Around 30 acres - 10 acres of crop and 20 acres of stubble were destroyed.

According to Tristan Beard who saw the fire, it was the combination of dry land and high winds that caused the fire to spread quickly with up to 14 fire crews in attendance.

He said: “I was driving home at the time when I saw that the fire had started.

“At its peak around 4.45pm, 14 appliances were attending from both Hampshire and Wiltshire, along with the Military Police.

“The fire service did well to stop the fire spreading to adjacent fields in the high winds.”
