PAST and present volunteers met to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Bourne Valley Link Scheme at the weekend.
The scheme provides a free support service to enable those without access to transport to use local services and facilities.
Bourne Valley Link Scheme chairman Maureen Atkinson said: “I don’t know how we managed without the link scheme before.
“People do rely on it – it’s not just taking people to appointments, it’s the companionship it offers, and all the volunteers really enjoy helping out.”
The range of services includes providing transport for medical appointments, shopping and social visits in addition to collecting shopping and prescriptions.
Volunteers also offer practical help for small tasks in the home or garden and caring support such as befriending or reading to a visually impaired client.
During 2013, volunteers of Bourne Valley Link undertook 1,856 tasks, gave more than 4,600 hours of their free time helping our clients & covered over 16,000 miles.
Salisbury MP John Glen attended the anniversary celebrations, which took place on Saturday at Idminster Memorial Hall in Porton.
