A 26-YEAR-OLD from Morgan’s Vale is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro later this month in memory of her grandmother who died following a battle with breast cancer.

Sarah Warr, who works at the travel company Discover Adventure in Coombe Bissett, is climbing the mountain in Tanzania with her colleague, Leanne Butler.

Her grandma would have been celebrating her 93rd birthday this year but passed away in 1993 when Sarah was four.

She said: “I would attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the ‘seven summits’ and highest freestanding mountain in the world, a million times over to win back the luxury of time to have grown up with my grandma there.

“She was treated at Salisbury Odstock Hospital and I have decided to fundraise, while fully funding the trip to Tanzania myself, for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign, in the hope that I can in some way contribute to winning back time for someone else.”

Sarah, who is an open challenges coordinator at the travel company, will be undergoing her challenge from February 20 to March 1.

The Stars Appeal campaign aims to raise £750,000 for a dedicated Breast Care Unit at Salisbury District Hospital. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and the new unit will help over 4,500 local patients each year, from across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset.

Leanne, an accountant at Discover Adventure, is fundraising for the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust (SSIT) who help people living with spinal cord injury in the South and South West of England.

They support The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre based at Salisbury District Hospital where Leanne’s father spent four months in 2006 after a motorcycle accident. He was left paralysed from the waist down but with support and encouragement from SSIT and self-motivation he has continued to ride motorbikes and lead an active lifestyle, albeit from his wheelchair.
