A MUM of four who was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer just a few months ago will be walking around Wilton Estate on June 21 raising money for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.

Pam Blake, from Salisbury, first went to her GP after noticing a small niggle under her right arm and was sent to hospital for tests.

An ultrasound showed that she had a tumour in the lymph nodes under her right arm and a month later an MRI scan showed her breast cancer cells had spread to her left shoulder.

Now having had four lots of chemotheraphy, she is waiting to find out if the treatment has been successful in killing the cancer.

She said: “I’ve been given between two and five years to live but in some cases people can live for ten to 20 years – I’m going to be one of these.

“It’s not hereditary, that was one of the first things we asked – it’s just one of those things, everybody has got cancer cells inside their body and some of them trigger, some don’t.”

Pam, who has worked as a teaching assistant at Sarum St Paul’s Primary School for 15 years, said staff from the school would also be joining the Walk for Wards event along with many family members and friends.

She said: “It was a bolt out of the blue and has made me sit back – it does change your life. Hopefully we’ll come through the other side. A lot of people have said it’s about having a positive mindset – my daughters and husband have been brilliant.”

Pam, 52, will be walking the 3km route around Wilton House supporting the campaign to raise £750,000 for a dedicated breast care unit at Salisbury Hospital.

“The hospital is absolutely amazing,” she said. “Everyone is lovely, you never feel as though you are on your own.

“It’s really made me realise how lucky we are to live here with such a good hospital down the road. They deserve every penny they get.”

*More than 600 people have already signed up to Walk for Wards. The event, which involves a choice between the family-friendly 3km or the more challenging 10km route, is free to enter and includes a free lunch and free admission to the Wilton House grounds and the adventure playground afterwards.

All participants must raise a minimum £15 sponsorship. For more details visit starsappeal.org
