SALISBURY Cathedral has appointed a new 'surveyor of the fabric' or cathedral architect.

The keys to the cathedral will be formally handed over to Izaak Hudson of Purcell Architects in Bristol on Wednesday when he takes over from the current cathedral architect, Michael Drury of St Ann’s Gate Architects.

Michael Drury is stepping down after 22 years with the cathedral.

No stranger to ancient and venerable buildings, Hudson already serves as architect to Truro Cathedral in Cornwall, Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff and Malmesbury Abbey.

His job will require him to undertake regular inspections of the Cathedral’s fabric, provide detailed surveys of its condition, and supervise any work on the Cathedral in collaboration with Gary Price, clerk of the works.

Alongside his faith buildings work, Hudson has also been responsible for a range of award-winning secular projects, most notably Tudor House Museum in Southampton and the regeneration of Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol.

He is on the Bristol Diocesan Advisory Committee, and a member of the regional Civic Trust and RIBA Awards assessing panels.
