A WOMAN from Salisbury is set to take on one the toughest tests on the planet this weekend when she sets off on the gruelling six day Marathon des Sables.

The 170 mile race across the Sahara desert starts on Sunday when Mandy Davin will take on 1383 other competitors in the 50 degree heat.

Runners can face dehydration and exhaustion as they trek across the desert carrying kit which can weigh as much as 10kg.

Mandy will be taking on the challenge for Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire which supports individuals affected by Acquired Brain Injury, such as from a stroke or road traffic accident, and their families.

She said: "Acquired Brain Injury is such a hidden disability that affects not only the individual but can have a devastating impact on the family as well. Brain Injury can change personalities as well as capabilities but with the right help at the right time there can be life after brain injury."

Mandy has already been out to Morocco to train with Mohamad Ahansal, five times winner of the Marathon des Sables, so that she can get used to running in the desert.

She said of the race: “This is a challenge of a lifetime – I still can’t believe I’m going."

In preparation for the race she has been running a marathon a month for the charity which has seen her tackle the Great South Run in fancy dress as well as a trip to Canada for the Montreal marathon.

Sarah Allen, development officer for Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire said: "We are thrilled that Mandy is undertaking this immense challenge to support the charity. We would like to give her all the local support we can while she competes."

Throughout the race Mandy will be able to receive messages of support through the Marathon de Sables website at marathondessables.com.
