TWO schools in south Wiltshire have been awarded funding from central government for much-needed improvements to their school buildings.

Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls School in Redlynch is using the money to extend a room into a new classroom while Woodford Valley School is now able to repair a leaking flat roof.

Headteacher of Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls Graham Nagel-Smith said: “Historically the building was a library but it is now used as a small group work room.

“We will be extending this into a classroom for an extra class.

“We are working with the Diocese and are hoping the classroom will be ready for September.”

The total cost of the extension is expected to be £90,000 with the school providing around a quarter of the funding from the school budget.

The school, which includes the onsite pre-school, has around 130 children aged between two and 11.

Woodford Valley School chairman of governors Susan Waters said the funding would mean an end to having put buckets out to catch the leaks.

She said: “It’s really quite an urgent job.

“The roof is over our resource base for children on the autistic spectrum.

“As soon as it is repaired it means we will be able to stop worrying when we see storm clouds.

“We are waiting to hear when the work will be done.”

Woodford Valley has 162 children with 14 children using the resource base.

The funding for the two schools has come via The Condition Improvement Fund.

The fund targets schools that need additional money for repairs, or to help them expand.

It is part of £367 million that the government has allocated for investment in buildings at more than one thousand schools across the country.
