THE Dogs Trust in Salisbury has described a spike in the number of unwanted puppies being handed into the charity as "shocking".

From January to March this year 72 puppies have been handed in — a 60 per cent increase on the 45 handed in over the same period last year.

The dogs range in age from three to six weeks with the reasons owners handing them in varying from an unwanted litter to relationship break-ups.

Lucy Hooper from the Dogs Trust said: “It’s been shocking to see such a large number of unwanted puppies arrive at the centre over the past couple of months.

"Christmas and the New Year is always a busy time but no-one could have predicted this many puppies would be handed in after Christmas as people realise the commitment that they involve.

"We urge the public to really think before they buy a puppy as they are a huge commitment and it’s vital to be fully prepared and ready to take on this responsibility."

Many of the puppies have now found a new home but staff at the Rehoming Centre in Salisbury are appealing for new owners to provide a fresh start for the remaining few.

Lucy added: “This month so far we have had 16 puppies handed in and we have 13 puppies still here, from two litters.

"The first litter are six week old German Shorthaired Pointer/Siberian Husky Cross pups and the second litter are 4 week old Lurcher Cross pups.

"The puppies will be looking for families who can teach them their basic training and continue to socialise them so they grow up to be well rounded dogs. They will need someone who is around for most of the day as they will need close care.

"If you are thinking of getting a puppy, Dogs Trust and The Kennel Club are also launching a Puppy Socialisation Plan which provides advice on how to give puppies the best start in life.
