AN army of pig-decorated scarecrows will be surrounding West Dean this month ahead of its much-loved fete.

Hundreds of fete lovers are set to descend on the village green for hosts of activities.

As well as the traditional scarecrow competition, there will be sheep racing, fly fishing demonstrations, tug of war, dog show, live music, raffle, tombola, craft fair, vintage car and steam engine tractor and laser clay-pigeon shooting.

More than 1,200 people supported the event last year and chairman Derek Howland is hoping for another big turnout.

He said: “West Dean aims to give our community and visitors from surrounding communities a true traditional village fete experience with family fun, great stalls and wonderful food.

“The fete last year was highly successful, with a profit of £7,000 going to support village groups but, with our Pig Fest scarecrow-theme, we are aiming to beat this.”

It opens from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, May 30.
