THE annual Bishop’s Fête is a “classic English summer fête” promising fun for all the family.

It takes place in the gardens of the Bishop of Salisbury’s house, South Canonry.

The event funds healthcare in South Sudan, the world’s newest country and the one with the world’s highest neo-natal death rate.

The fête will take place on Sunday, June 7, from 2pm onwards in the southwest corner of Salisbury Cathedral Close.

Helen Holtam, the Bishop of Salisbury’s wife, who is one of the key organizers of the fête, said:

“This classic English summer fête raises money in support of the Salisbury Sudan Medical Link. The money raised adds to that given generously by individual donors in the Diocese.

“The Link funds the purchase of medicines and supports the training of medical workers in South Sudan, such as nurses and laboratory assistants. There is a particular focus on midwives in a country which has the world’s highest maternal mortality rate

“The last batch graduated in November and ten more have just been sponsored for three-year contracts. One South Sudanese woman in seven dies in childbirth; these medical professionals are life savers.

“The Link also assists in the building and equipping of clinics. Members of the Link who are highly qualified in the field regularly visit to monitor developments and check that money is well spent.

“The day is always great fun for all the family – even if the weather is wet, we carry out all the same activities inside the Cathedral. There will be many stalls, attractions and other treats, games, music, a clown and live camels.

“It promises to be great family afternoon in a beautiful setting for a very worthy cause.”
