A PLAQUE has been unveiled to celebrate the history of Vanner's Chequer.
A small ceremony was held in Salt Lane to mark the occasion with the Mayor of Salisbury, Cllr Andrew Roberts, and resident Wendy English, who has been the main driving force behind getting the blue plaque, in attendance.
Vanner's Chequer refers to the block of properties between Salt Lane and Bedwin Street, created by the medieval design of streets forming a square grid, and therefore a number of similar chequers.
Originally, each home and business on the adjoining streets owned part of the central space for growing vegetables, or keeping livestock, but nowadays, all but one of the chequers has been filled by building development.
St Edmunds Residents Association hope that all the city's other chequers will eventually display information about their history, for the interest of residents and visitors alike.
