Salisbury Mayor Andrew Roberts said: “I am delighted that the sun shone and so many people came out and enjoyed themselves, sharing some of the best of England in our city that is itself an icon of England.

“I understand that the dragon was safely dealt with for another year.

“I am also pleased that we honoured England’s traditional vagueness about our national day by celebrating it a day late.”
