A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries after a serious crash on the A36.

The woman, in her early sixties, was trapped in the wreckage of her beige VW Beetle after it collided with a lorry near Stapleford.

The air ambulance and a rapid response team attended, alongside police and firefighters, who cut the woman free.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said paramedics were on scene dealing with a female patient who was unconcious with head injuries.

Road closures were in place at The Swan in Great Wishford, on the Stapleford bend and at South Newton.

The road was closed for several hours while a large oil spillage was cleared and the vehicles were recovered.

Fire crews from Salisbury attended alongside two from Warminster  and a heavy rescue unit from Trowbridge.

The woman is from the Salisbury area and her family have been informed of the accident.

She has been flown to Southampton General Hospital.
